Adventure is Out There!
In 2017, close to the end of the year, I decided to do something I never thought I would actually end up doing: Buy a piece of land for future use. In general, this is something I had wanted since I was in my 20's and never thought would ever actually become a reality.
When the opportunity arose, I jumped on it. Albeit, the property is 2.5 hours away from where I currently live, but it was bought as a piece of land on which I could plan to put a cottage or future residence.

Two and a half years later, here I am... In the process of planning how to move forward with the property to make it a bit more useable. I mean, as much as I love trees, having a property that's literally completed wooded is a bit much. :)
For perspective, the lot is approximately 5 acres or 2 hectares big, and it is nearly completely covered in trees. The photo above shows the frontage to the road: Where you see the car is the other end of the property from where I stood to take the photo.
I had initially planned to take this first weekend in August to clear easily clearable brush, but with the rainy weather, I will instead focus on mapping out the property to better understand things like my property boundary, elevation at different points of the property, major trees, etc... Basically the start of a DIY topographical survey of the place. I currently only have a geographical survey, which is not very great at helping to plan out some of the details.
The goal I'm setting for myself is to have a somewhat livable situation in about 5 years time. Once I've assessed the property in a bit more detail, I will aim to clear enough trees/brush to have walking paths that go around the perimeter of the property and also cross through the property.
After that, I will aim to clear about a 5000 square foot area as a starting point for building a winterized home. Part of my goal is to keep some of the older/larger trees on the property in the process of clearing, but we'll see how that goes.
I had originally shared my vision of the property in a fantastic supportive group of DIY enthusiasts and the encouragement, advice and general positive vibes I received was above and beyond anything I could have ever expected, so I decided to hop on the blog bandwagon to have a centralized place to share my experience as I go through everything.
I had also thought that I might build a tent platform in one of the more open areas of the property this weekend, so that I can stay on site overnights without sleeping in my car at the roadside, but I think for now, I'll have to stick to day trips seeing as if I build a platform, I would Ideally like for that platform to become the starting point of a miniature shed of some kind, and I'm not sure I'm ready to put that much effort into that at this time.
